Industrial Nitrogen Plant

Industrial nitrogen plant is high quality machinery used for producing nitrogen with purity up to 99.9% considered sufficient for meeting industrial requirements. Our N2 gas plant is manufactured with the cutting-edge cryogenic air separation technology. It is made with world-class materials that could withstand extreme temperature and pressure. Our air separation column is exquisitely designed and constructed with cryogenic grade stainless steel and argon welding. Since our manufacturing is benchmarked against European standards, we use components and cryogenic technology procured from the reputed European OEMs. Our focus is always to deliver innovative air separation products that imbibe the emerging techniques. Made with standards materials and components, our O2 plants have a life-cycle of over 25 years needing minimum maintenance. They also save significant amount of money on electricity consumption.

Importance of Nitrogen

Nitrogen is an important nonmetallic element that constitutes 78% of Earth’s atmosphere by volume and 75.51% by weight. Importance of nitrogen can be understood from the fact it is found in all living organisms and is said to be the largest industrially consumed gas. Atmospheric air is the chief source for nitrogen used in industrial and commercial applications. Nitrogen is valued for its inert properties which are useful for displacement of oxygen. It is also found in mineral deposits but not in a measure that could meet human requirements. It makes up around 16% by weight of complex organic compounds called proteins which are found in all organic compounds. Important as nitrogen is for living matter, living organisms does not have direct access but must depend on its compounds through a process known as nitrogen fixation.

Why We need Nitrogen

Valued for its inert characteristics, nitrogen is used for atmospheric modification to prevent oxidation, fires and explosions. For its inertness, it is used in wide range of industries where transportation of important products for long hauls is required with minimization of fire hazards like petroleum products. In the food and beverages industry it is used for preserving taste, integrity, texture and shelf life. It is used in making synthetic ammonia and nitrates. The nonmetallic element is valuable for manufacturing of most of the major pharmacological drug classes. Numerous drugs are based on the behavior of natural nitrogen-containing signal molecules. Blood pressure is controlled by metabolizing of organic nitrates nitroglycerin and nitroprusside into nitric oxide. It is also found in amino acids (protein), nucleic acids (RNA & DNA) and adenosine triphosphate, the energy transfer molecule.

Uses of Nitrogen

Nitrogen has countless uses in our day to day life. First of all, it is used for creating inert atmosphere during reaction where oxygen and moisture must be kept out. Modified atmosphere is created for preservation of packaged or bulk foods for increasing their shelf life and preventing damage caused by moisture and oxidation. In steel industry, it is used for case-hardening of steel by nitriding. In the chemical industry, it is primarily used for prevention of oxidation or inerting a reactive gas or as a carrier for removal of heat. In the food & beverages industry, it is used for preventing deterioration of food due to oxidation, mold and insects. Liquid nitrogen is used in the making of refrigeration systems & freeze drying. For prevention of oxidation and other chemical reactions nitrogen is employed in the making of various electrical equipments. In the metal industry it is useful in the prevention of oxidation, carburization, and decarburization. There are numerous other applications which will be described elsewhere in the site.

Types of Nitrogen

Nitrogen is industrially used in two forms-gaseous nitrogen and liquid nitrogen. Both of them have various important industrial applications and characteristics described below:

Nitrogen Gas (GAN)

Nitrogen mostly exists as gas in our atmosphere. Around 75% of commercially produced nitrogen is used in its gaseous form. Most of GAN is used for creating inert atmosphere in order to avoid explosions and fired caused by oxidation as described above. It is also used in incandescent light bulbs & manufacturing of IT equipment as fire suppression system. It also finds application in the manufacturing of stainless steel.

Liquid Nitrogen

Liquid nitrogen is a liquefied gas also known as cryogenic liquid, which are defined liquefied gases with a boiling point below –130°F (–90°C). Nitrogen with a boiling point of −195.795 °C (−320.431 °F) is a cryogenic liquid. It is estimated that 25% of all commercially produced nitrogen is used as LIN. It is used in cryo-surgery for removal of skin warts and cysts. It is also used for cryopreservation of samples of blood, semen and various other types of biological samples.

How to Produce Nitrogen

There are many techniques for industrial production of nitrogen. Cryogenic distillation and pressure swing adsorption (PSA). These two techniques are the most commonly used in the industrial production of nitrogen. Both of them are described below:

Cryogenic Distillation

It is based on the liquefaction and separation of gases with the distillation of the desired gas. Atmospheric air is taken inside the air separation unit where it is filtered and compressed. Then it is passed through a purification unit comprising of molecular sieves where impurities such as hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide and moisture is removed. Then, it is passed through a series of heat exchangers where it is cooled to extremely low pressures. Now the air is moved into a high pressure distillation column where nitrogen is separated from other gases. Nitrogen is formed at the top of the column. It is collected and distilled to get nitrogen with the desired purity.

Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA)

PSA nitrogen production is done by generating a stream of nitrogen gas from compressed air in twin towers of carbon molecular sieve (CMS). Air is entered through the bottom of the tower and goes through the CMS. Oxygen and other gases get adsorbed in the CMS with nitrogen being allowed to pass through. As per scheduled time, the tower will get automatically turned to regenerative mode evaporating contaminants from the CMS. The molecular sieves have pores that allow oxygen to pass through while nitrogen molecules by-pass the CMS and appear as the product gas
